Skin Care Tip
Why you should consider sulfate-free products!
Many shampoos contain sulfates which cause an increased lathering
effect in order to completely remove the oils and grime that
accumulate on our scalps. However, there are many downsides to using
shampoos or products that contain sulfates. Sulfates tend to
completely strip hair from all the natural oils, which could leave it
dry, dull, and brittle. Sulfates also should be avoided by anyone who
has sensitive skin because they tend to irritate the scalp even more
by drying it out or causing dandruff. Anyone with color treated hair
should also avoid using sulfate containing products because it is
known to strip away the color. Sulfate containing shampoos are labeled
as “SLS” or “SLES”.
There are many non-sulfate shampoos that contain organic and natural
ingredients that are meant to not harm humans. These shampoos are
gentler and contain vitamins that are meant to keep the hair healthy

How exercise can strengthen your brain!
We are all more than accustomed to hearing about the benefits that
arise through exercise by now. Increasing longevity, lowering heart
rate and blood cholesterol, relieving stress, maintaining a healthy
weight and staving off diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and
cancer are just a few notable benefits. However, a very important
benefit of exercise that is not as commonly known is how it affects
and strengthens the brain.
A quick biochemical lesson on how exercise can strengthen our brains –
physical exercise stimulates the creation of new mitochondria within
the brain cells. Mitochondria are basically the fuel of energy that
reside within our cells. The stronger the mitochondria means the more
vital the cell, which leads to a few key benefits. These benefits
include sharper thinking skills, reducing mental fatigue and also
possibly delaying or fighting off neurodegenerative diseases such as
Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Deficits in mitochondria have been
linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases and storage of
mitochondria can help fight them off.
Other benefits for the brain due to exercise include improved memory
and learning, pain relief, mood enhancement, endorphin release and a
correlation with strong mental health which helps fight depression.
Plastic Surgery Tip
Why you should quit smoking before surgery!
Everyone knows how bad smoking is for our health and why we should
avoid it. In addition to the well-known health hazards of smoking, it
is also strongly advisable to quit smoking prior to a surgical
procedure. Smoking is known to increase risks and complications during
and after surgery. Smoking within 24 hours before a surgery may
restrict blood flow to the heart. Even smoking within 6 weeks of
surgery is known to prolong the recovery process. Smoking can also
interfere with anesthesia which in turn may create complications
Other complications with smoking and surgery include infections that
otherwise can be controlled and an increased cost of hospital
facilities due to a delay of discharge of the patient from the
recovery room. Our advice is to quit smoking for a minimum of 2-3
weeks in order to ensure a faster recovery, less complications, and to
achieve the best results possible.

Make sure you chose a board certified plastic surgeon. A call to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or ASPS at 1-888-4-PLASTIC (ie. 1-888-475-2784) can tell you which doctors are legitimate plastic surgeons with outstanding qualifications. You can also visit the ASPS web site at www.plasticsurgery.org. The ASPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body. When considering a cosmetic surgeon, you should also make sure your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS). A call to ASAPS (1-888-272-7711) or visiting the ASAPS website (www.plasticsurgery.org) can help you verify your plastic surgeons membership.
